Where must does not settle
England's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework does not simply guide practice. It requires a form of practitioner existence: permanently responsive, documentable, vigilant, and answerable within the statutory life of provision.
What remains is not resistance. Not refusal. Not revelation.
In this sound work, each instance of must is spoken aloud. At 245, must is no longer only instruction. It becomes atmosphere, pulse, pressure. A statutory voice held in force. This is not a reading of policy as information. It is a sounding of obligation.
As each must is voiced, command no longer arrives as a single instruction. It gathers without settling. It holds. It presses. It exposes the fantasy that obligation can contain existence.
